Mindfulness based approaches at work
What is “mindfulness” about?
“Now is the only time you have for anything”
In our work lives, we are often asked to do more, faster, with fewer resources. How can we stay clear, calm and focused to make sound decisions and build strong working relationships when we are under this pressure? Mindfulness has become a recognised approach in businesses to help people handle pressure and navigate their work (and life) challenges with clarity and awareness.
More than that, mindfulness is an approach to living life that helps us to appreciate and get the most out of every moment - it has been called “the art of conscious living”
Why consider using mindfulness at work?
Greater clarity: “you see more and you see more clearly” (Kabat-Zinn): better business decisions and clearer perspectives on challenges.
Deal with the sense of overwhelm that we sometimes experience in work and life
Gain a better balance and response to challenging work situations, and enhance working relationships with colleagues
A greater sense of well being, energy and focus at work (and in life)
A richer, fuller and more vivid experience of life
Learn tools, techniques and ways of approaching daily life that will help to develop your ability to stay calm, focused and aware – particularly when you feel overwhelmed and under pressure.
What are the credentials for mindfulness?
Modern mindfulness practices were developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre and research continues at many academic institutions including Oxford and Bangor Universities in the UK.
Business such as GlaxoSmithKline and Barclays Bank are offering mindfulness classes and techniques to their people, and experiencing the benefits.
The Government’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has approved the 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course as an effective alternative to drugs.
Numerous studies have been conducted that demonstrate the effectiveness of mindfulness to help people manage the pressures of every day work and life.
